Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption of open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.
The events are open to anyone: from curious citizens to journalists, tech-geeks to scientists, designers to data wranglers.
The Open Education Working Group is really keen to promote all the Open Data Day events relating to education, so we have a little list for you!
  • The Open Knowledge Foundation Ireland are organizing a book sprint to create an open source and free to use textbook for schools that will help kids get coding and computing. A Dublin Hackathon is also being organised supported by Dublinked and Fingal Open Data, one of the projects they will be working on is tidying up the Higher education statistics for Republic of Ireland
  • In the US the Open New York Forum’s Open Data Day will take the form of three tracks, one of which is Planning the future of NYC’s Internet access, Education Policy, Open Government, and Technology Industry Policy via the NY Tech Meetup. At North Carolina State University Triangle2014 also focuses on three issues: Open data education; hacking for civic good and uniting the triangle through data.
  • At the Kathmandu2013 Hackathon “Tracing Foreign Aid to Nepal, how much aid is going to Education sector?” has been suggested as one of the problem statements
  • In Bandung, Indonesia the World Bank Indonesia will hold a one-day workshop of open data for development in the Bandung Institute of Technology. Education will be one of the themes of the Open Data Idea Challenge.
Other countries with open education data themes include Holland, Canada and Ghana.
Have a great Open Data Day!

Join us in Berlin for OKFestival 2014!

OKFestival, the Open Knowledge Festival, is back!
Join us from July 15th – 17th 2014 for an international gathering of open communities in Berlin. As well as the two days of keynote lectures, discussion sessions, workshops and hackathons, there’ll be additional fringe events around the city. We look forward to seeing you there!
okfest-old3
  • This year’s OKFestival will build on many years of successful international open knowledge events – including OKFestival 2012 and OKCon 2013 – to create a meeting that is focused on turning open knowledge into positive action.
What are the defining qualities of OKFestival?
  • Global: We welcome, reach out to, and offer a platform to anyone interested and/or involved in the Open movement.
  • Diverse and inclusive:  OKFestival embraces global diversity – we’re keen to see attendees from all backgrounds. Add your voice to the mix!
  • Participatory: It’s OKFestival attendees that make the event! You will run and wrangle sessions – work in groups, hack, discuss, debate – shaping the event and its outcomes.
OKFestival is a great opportunity for those who are completely new to the idea of the Open Movement to meet open movement makers, thinkers, activists, and researchers and for everyone to share  experiences, projects and ideas from around the world – and make plans for the future! If you’re interested in how to use open knowledge to better understand and improve our everyday lives, and to tackle local and global challenges, join us in Berlin.
