DAR ES SALAAM OPEN KNOWLEDGE COMMUNITY EVENTS RECAP

FIRST OPEN KNOWLEDGE MEETUP IN DAR ES SALAAM -TANZANIA
On 19th February 2014, the first Community meetup was held at the Innovation Space (COSTECH Building) in Dar es Salaam. The meetup was attended by members from Creative Commons Tanzania, Twaweza, and TANZICT. Some of the achievements of the meet up was founding the Community (12 founding members joined the Community). Mr. Yulli Jeremia, Community leader, introduced about the Open Knowledge Foundation Network and the goals and values of the Dar es Salaaam Open Knowledge Community. Members discussed on potential projects to pursue in the future and the need to target more open knowledge enthusiast in Tanzania. The community resolved to participate in the global Open Data Day 2014 despite having very short preparation time.

ODD2014 IN DAR ES SALAAM!
Did you konw that ODD2014 took place in Dar on 22nd February 2014? Despite having short time for preparation yet the event was very successful! Acknowledgement for the success goes to the OKFNTZ, TWAWEZA, TANZICT, and CREATIVE COMMONS TANZANIA for putting together their comparative advantage to make the event a success. Our open knowledge enthusiasts got busy with discussion on Open Knowledge Community Building, visualized population census, and presented on two open data projects supported by Twaweza. Visualization of health facilities in Tanzania presented by Mr. Jumanne Mtambalike from TANZICT (see Afya Map Project) opened our eyes to appreciate the power of open data. This was followed by a presentation cum data visualization by Mr. Al Amin from Twaweza on the Voices of Citizen Project (Sauti za Wananchi) and Shule.infohttp://www.shule.info/ project. Both projects are open data driven and aims at empowering both citizens and policy makers through easing access to information/data.

Join us in Berlin for OKFestival 2014!

OKFestival, the Open Knowledge Festival, is back!
Join us from July 15th – 17th 2014 for an international gathering of open communities in Berlin. As well as the two days of keynote lectures, discussion sessions, workshops and hackathons, there’ll be additional fringe events around the city. We look forward to seeing you there!
okfest-old3
  • This year’s OKFestival will build on many years of successful international open knowledge events – including OKFestival 2012 and OKCon 2013 – to create a meeting that is focused on turning open knowledge into positive action.
What are the defining qualities of OKFestival?
  • Global: We welcome, reach out to, and offer a platform to anyone interested and/or involved in the Open movement.
  • Diverse and inclusive:  OKFestival embraces global diversity – we’re keen to see attendees from all backgrounds. Add your voice to the mix!
  • Participatory: It’s OKFestival attendees that make the event! You will run and wrangle sessions – work in groups, hack, discuss, debate – shaping the event and its outcomes.
OKFestival is a great opportunity for those who are completely new to the idea of the Open Movement to meet open movement makers, thinkers, activists, and researchers and for everyone to share  experiences, projects and ideas from around the world – and make plans for the future! If you’re interested in how to use open knowledge to better understand and improve our everyday lives, and to tackle local and global challenges, join us in Berlin.
